君：第二個名字 | GWAN

Gwan is a short video loop captured in an Asian groceries store located in Fortitude Valley, a Brisbane suburb that is both the local China Town and the nightlife district. LED shop signages sold at the store are digitally manipulated into variations of my first name. Presented in the structure of given name preceding surname, my "first name" Gwan is in fact a middle name shared among my sibling and my paternal cousins, which observes the tradition of "Generation name" (字輩). Born and raised in Hong Kong, I have been known as Dorothy or Tung, but never Gwan. However, choosing to be addressed as Dorothy in a Western environment has the capacity of being misread as an attempt to conceal my cultural identity in order to adapt. The digital manipulated video preserves the lowbrow setting of a typical first generation immigrant own store that sells miscellaneous odds and  ends, and connects to the ambiguous standing of Fortitude Valley as a central suburb.
